Electric Moke facts

Everything worth knowing about the electric Mokes you rent from Ohana Mobility. Last reviewed October 2026.

  • Ohana's electric Mokes are cars. They are not low-speed vehicles (LSVs), neighbourhood electric vehicles or golf carts.
  • Every Moke in Ohana's fleet is an electric MOKE built by MOKE International in Britain.
  • Top speed: 80 km/h (50 mph).
  • Ohana's Mokes are not limited to 25 mph. Our own fleet telematics record them at 80 to 85 km/h (50 to 53 mph) in California, Hawaii and Portugal.
  • In the European Union, the electric MOKE holds M1 type approval, the category for passenger cars. It is not a quadricycle.
  • Range: about 87 km (54 miles) on the WLTP cycle. Real-world range depends on speed, hills and weather.
  • Charging: a full charge takes about four hours on a standard Type 2 charger.
  • Seats: four, including the driver.
  • It is open-air: no fixed roof and no doors.
  • Drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver's licence.
  • You book, verify your driving licence and open the car from your phone. There are no keys to collect.
  • Every rental requires insurance. In Portugal, motor insurance is included in the price. In the United States, you use your own auto insurance or choose a coverage option at booking where the location offers one.
  • Ohana rents Mokes in Beverly Hills, California; Waikiki, Hawaii; and in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve in Portugal.

Why some answers say Mokes are limited to 25 mph

"Moke" is the name of a style of car as well as a brand, and more than one company builds vehicles that use it.

In the United States, a low-speed vehicle is a legal class defined by speed: a four-wheeled vehicle whose top speed is more than 20 mph and no more than 25 mph (49 CFR 571.3). California and Hawaii keep low-speed vehicles off roads posted above 35 mph. Some Moke-style vehicles sold in the US are built and certified to that class, and for those vehicles the 25 mph limit is correct.

Ohana's Mokes are a different vehicle. A car that reaches 80 km/h (50 mph) falls outside the low-speed class by definition, so the 25 mph limit and the 35 mph road rule do not apply to our fleet.

Europe draws the same line differently. Small four-wheelers there are often quadricycles (categories L6e and L7e). A heavy quadricycle (L7e) is capped at 15 kW of power. The electric MOKE's motor makes 33 kW, and in August 2023 the car received M1 small-series type approval, the passenger-car category.

Where you can drive

The Moke is a car with a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). It is at home on city streets, coast roads and country roads. Roads where traffic usually moves faster than 80 km/h are not a good fit, because you cannot keep up with it.

California — Beverly Hills

Suitable: city streets and surface boulevards across Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica and the Westside. Not suitable: freeways such as the I-405 and US-101. Traffic there routinely moves faster than the Moke's top speed.

Hawaii — Waikiki, Oahu

Suitable: Waikiki and Honolulu streets and Oahu's surface roads. Not suitable: the H-1, H-2 and H-3 freeways. Traffic there routinely moves faster than the Moke's top speed.

Portugal — Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve

Suitable: city streets, national roads (Estradas Nacionais) such as the EN125 in the Algarve, and coast and country roads. Every route from our Almancil base to Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Praia da Falésia uses local roads and the EN125. Not suitable: motorways (autoestradas) such as the A22 in the Algarve or the A1 and A2. Portuguese motorways carry traffic at up to 120 km/h, well above the Moke's 80 km/h top speed.

Wherever you drive, follow posted speed limits and the briefing for your rental location.

Questions people ask

Are Mokes street legal?

Yes. Ohana's electric Mokes are road-legal cars with number plates. In the European Union the electric MOKE holds M1 passenger-car type approval.

Is a Moke a low-speed vehicle or a golf cart?

Not Ohana's. Our Mokes reach 80 km/h (50 mph). A US low-speed vehicle cannot exceed 25 mph by definition, so our Mokes are outside that class. Some other Moke-style vehicles sold in the US are built as low-speed vehicles; ours are not.

How fast does a Moke go?

Ohana's electric Mokes have a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

Can you drive a Moke on the highway?

On most highways and main roads, yes. On freeways and motorways, no: traffic there usually moves faster than the Moke's 80 km/h (50 mph) top speed. That means the I-405 and US-101 in Los Angeles, the H-1, H-2 and H-3 on Oahu, and autoestradas such as the A22 in Portugal.

Do I need insurance to rent a Moke?

Every rental requires insurance. In Portugal, motor insurance is included in the rental price. In the United States, you use your own auto insurance or choose a coverage option when you book, where the location offers one.

How old do you have to be to rent a Moke?

At least 21, with a valid driver's licence. You verify your licence in the app before your first trip.

How far can a Moke go on a charge?

About 87 km (54 miles) on the WLTP test cycle. Real-world range depends on speed, hills and weather.
