Getting around the Algarve's Golden Triangle without a car
Getting around Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Almancil without a car: Vamus buses, the Algarve train, Uber and Bolt, bikes, and electric Moke rentals.
By Ohana Mobility
You can manage in the Golden Triangle (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Almancil) without a car, but public transport alone will not take you far. Quinta do Lago has boardwalks to the beach, bike hire and walking and cycling trails through the Ria Formosa. Vamus buses and the regional train reach Almancil, though services are infrequent and the station is outside the places it serves. Most visitors combine walking or cycling with Uber or Bolt. For days out along the coast, you can rent an open-air electric Moke from Supercar House, the official MOKE dealer in Almancil.
The honest picture
The Golden Triangle was built around golf, villas and beaches, not around transit. One travel guide puts it plainly: a car is “not essential if you stay in a well-connected town and use the train, buses and the occasional taxi, but a car makes reaching hidden beaches and villages much easier.” Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are resort communities spread across pine woods and fairways, not towns with a central bus stop. Plan on a mix of walking, cycling, rideshare and the occasional day with your own wheels.
On foot and by bike
Within Quinta do Lago, a wooden bridge crosses the lagoon to the dunes and the beach. Walking trails run through the pine woods and along the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which stretches 60 km along this part of the coast. The Bike Shed at The Campus rents bikes to adults and children, and guided group rides leave several mornings a week. For longer rides, the Ecovia do Litoral is a relaxed cycling route along the Algarve coast.
Buses: Vamus Algarve
Vamus is the Algarve’s regional bus network. The main coastal route runs between Lagos and Faro roughly once an hour and takes 1.5 to 2 hours end to end. For the Golden Triangle, the most useful service is Line 55. It links Almancil, Quarteira and Vilamoura with Faro Airport and the University of the Algarve’s Gambelas campus. Buses into Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago usually need a change in Almancil, and services run less often in the evenings and at weekends. Check timetables on the Vamus website or app before you set out.
Trains: the Linha do Algarve
The regional railway runs along the coast between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, with a stop at Almancil. The ride from Faro to Almancil takes about 12 minutes, but trains run only every few hours. As on much of this line, the station sits outside the places you will want to visit, so you will need a taxi or rideshare for the last stretch.
Uber, Bolt and taxis
Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve and usually cost less than a taxi. Download the apps before you arrive. At busy times, especially when several flights land together at Faro, it can take a while to find a driver. Taxis cost more than the apps but are easier than public transport. For a late dinner in Almancil or Vale do Lobo, rideshare is usually the simplest way home.
An electric Moke for the coast
A car makes the most difference here on days you want to wander: a run along the coast to Vilamoura, lunch at a beach restaurant, out past the pines and back by sunset. Supercar House, the official MOKE dealer on the EN125 in Almancil, rents open-air electric Mokes through Ohana Mobility, by the hour or by the day, with no hotel stay needed.
